The Academic system

Academic institutions function differently from universities in the United States. The specifics vary from one institution to another. You may encounter differences in things like how Add/Drop works, how assignments graded and weighted, how professors interact with students, how placement tests work, how tests are weighted in the final grade, etc.  We've provided information below to help to get students prepare for the different academic experiences they will have on CIS Abroad's programs.

Florence University of Arts (FUA)

0-20

City Campus

FUA is a city campus, which may be different than your U.S. home institution campus. This means you'll be walking throughout the city to go from building-to-building. While public transportation is available, most students find it easier to walk to navigate campus, so pack your comfortable shoes! For a map of FUA buildings, please visit their website.

Course Fees

Don't get caught off guard by course fees! These are fees that are IN ADDITION to the tuition paid to CIS Abroad. If classes offer food and beverage, tickets to local sites, lab equipment, insurance for being off-site, or simply the professor's planning time, there may be additional fees associated with specific classes. These should have been noted when you registered for classes, but if you have any doubts, please contact your program enrollment coordinator for a list of courses with fees and the amounts. These are to be paid directly to FUA onsite, not to CIS Abroad.

Add/Drop Policy

You can make as many changes to your course enrollment at least 40 days before the start of the program. After that, please pay attention to the Add/Drop policy. This is listed under "Registration Changes" on FUA's Academic Standards and Regulations website

For January-term students, given the short-duration of this program, add/drop is not allowed.

For summer students, you may only add/drop ONE class on Orientation Day prior to the first day of class.

For 15-week semester students, there are two major sessions; the first 3-week session, and then the 11-week semester. You are only allowed to add/drop ONE course throughout the 15-week semester. This includes either one add and/or drop during the first three weeks, which can be made only on Orientation Day prior to the first day of class, OR one add and/or drop for the remaining 11 weeks, which can be done during the first week of that time. The last day to drop is the first Friday of that first 11-Week Semester.

Attendance Policy

Class is mandatory. On the second absence, the attendance and participation grade will be impacted. On the third absence the instructor may lower the final grade by one letter grade. The fourth absence constitutes automatic failure of the course. Read more about this on FUA's Academic Standards and Regulations website

Transcripts

Transcripts from this program are two-fold. You get a transcript from both FUA and their school of accreditation, University of South Florida (USF). Most U.S. schools will require the USF transcript to transfer credits, however, if you want to ask your U.S. institution if they will accept FUA's transcript, this will be much more expedient (it is compatible with the US credit hours and grading).

FUA transcripts take 6-8 weeks to return, and USF transcripts take 10-12 weeks to return. CIS Abroad usually send both transcripts at one time to your home university and students do not have to take any further action. Please note that if you are a January student, FUA considers this part of their Spring term, therefore, they do not start processing it until the END of Spring term, which is May. For Summer students, even if your session ended earlier, summer transcripts do not start processing until August.
  • Fall students - both transcripts can be expected to be ready mid-March
  • January students - both transcripts can be expected to be ready mid-August
  • Spring students - both transcripts can be expected to be ready mid-August
  • Summer students - both transcripts can be expected to be ready early November

It is possible to rush the FUA transcript. If you'd like to do so, please complete this form and return to tho@cisabroad.com. Unfortunately, a USF transcript cannot be rushed.

Need to order another USF transcript, do so here. Make sure to use your USF Student ID# found on the copy of your initial USF transcript.
